DA PACEM DOMINE IN DIEBVS NOSTRIS SI DEVS NOBIS QVS CONTRA NOS. An attractive large size double Taler with compelling iconographic images. Good strike with full legends and only minimal doubling. Even medium gray toning and flawless edges. A piece with lots to explore. NGC MS-63.
1636-LH. Hesse-Cassel. Wilhelm V "Willow Tree" Taler. Cassel mint, KM162.1, Dav-6755. Variety with 5 buildings (2 to left, 3 to right) and star//star. Displaying a willow tree bending under duress from the storm of war, aided by protection from God above (Jehovah spelled-out in Hebrew letters). During the Thirty Years War, Wilhelm V allied with King Gustavus II Adolphus of Sweden (both Protestant great-grandsons of Philip of Hesse) and subsequently faced repeated attacks by Imperial Catholic troops. In 1636 Wilhelm liberated an ancestral home, the fortress of Hanau, though died in exile one year later, after which his widow continued to mint Willow Tree Talers. NGC AU-58.
1756-ICB. German States. Regensburg. Free City Taler (in the name of Franz I (1745-1765). Regensburg Mint. DAV-2618; KM-372. Cr-45a. Perfectly struck, with the most intricate details of the buildings and portrait apparent in stark detail, the fields watery, and semi-prooflike in nature, and decorated with a sheen of rich, mauve patina. Perhaps the ultimate example of this beautiful type that captures the heart of the Baroque "city view" artistic style, The finest for the date by two full grade points at NGC, and indeed the only GEM example graded by either service for all dates of the series. Obv: Coat-of-arms surmounted by two ornately crested helmets. Rev: Crowned double-headed eagle facing with wings spread, holding sword and scepterl globus cruciger on breast. Superb toned example. Obv: Empty throne on pedestal below baldachin in throne room; above, patron saints Willibald and Walburgis in clouds below streaming eye of God. Rev: Oak tree with shields on branches, each inscribed with the name of a member of the college of canons of Eichstätt, before city scene. A broad and intricately designed issue, struck during the last Sede Vacante before the bishopric secularized in 1802, with splendid original tone over both the obverse and reverse. NGC MS-63.
